What is South Asian Dance

Room: The Clore Ballroom

Hosted and performed by Sonia Sabri and featuring special guest Mavin Khoo this event explores the roots of Indian classical dance. Indian dance goes back hundreds of years, and these beautiful dance styles continue to captivate artists and audiences all over the world. But what exactly is South Asian Dance?

Introducing the two most famous classical Indian dance styles: Kathak, from the north of India, and Bharatanatyam from the south. Award-winning Kathak dancer and choreographer Sonia presents her exquisite Kathak, joined by guest performer Mavin Khoo, a renowned Bharatanatyam dancer. Each charismatic artist offers an insight into their diverse and beautiful art forms through specially selected dance items. Sonia will also explain the origins and key features of each form, discuss some of the intriguing similarities and differences between North and South Indian style, and track the exciting journey of South Asian dance from the courts and temples of India to the modern world stage.

This is a wonderful chance to see two fine artists in their respective styles, and immerse yourself in sumptuous dance, as well as ask any burning questions.
